The Pattern Collection System
A complete, step-by-step framework to help you turn any idea into a beautiful, finished collection with clarity and confidence.
The Pattern Collection System is a guided workbook for surface designers who want to stop making one-off patterns and start building intentional collections that art directors want.
Have you ever created individual patterns you love, but then struggled to turn them into a collection that actually works together?
I’m willing to bet you don’t need another drawing course… you need a stronger foundation in design.
This workbook is about learning how to think like a designer: how color, layout, scale, and spacing work together. How each pattern plays a role within a collection and its end use. How to make intentional choices instead of just guessing.
Because strong collections aren’t just drawn — they’re designed.
Inside the Workbook You’ll Learn to:
Turn a broad theme into a clear, developed concept
Make intentional motif choices that support your concept (not just what feels right)
Build color palettes that feel natural and harmonious across a collection
Understand what each pattern is for — and how it’s used in real products
Create variation through scale, density, and flow
Finish a body of work that works
What’s Included in The Pattern Collection System:
49-page workbook with 3 units on Strategy, Design, and Presentation
4 guided planning worksheets + 1 cohesion checklist
2 Quick Reference Guides on color & design decisions
AI Pattern & Collection Evaluator tool for clear, structured feedback — anytime you need it
5 Canva sell sheet templates to help you present your collections for licensing
The Pattern Collection System is for designers ready to move beyond one-off patterns and start designing intentional collections. It is not instructional on illustration, style, software, or selling/licensing. It is best suited for designers who already understand the basics of repeating patterns.
Your collections feel off, but you’re not sure why.
I know you have great ideas, and you have beautiful motifs.
Maybe you even have finished patterns you love.
But when you zoom out, something isn’t clicking.
Your designs don’t quite work together
You’re not sure what your collection needs
Your portfolio feels scattered
Every new piece feels like starting over
And, it’s frustrating, especially when you know you’re capable of more.
Maybe your art isn’t the problem...
Maybe you need a stronger design process.
Great collections don’t happen by luck. They happen when the right design decisions are intentionally in place — decisions about theme, motif hierarchy, color, structure, and pattern roles.
If you’ve been thinking:
💭 “My prints look great on their own, but not together.”
💭 “I make one or two good patterns, and then I get stuck.”
💭 “I have cool ideas — I just don’t know how to make them work.
The Pattern Collection System will give you:
a clear framework for designing intentional pattern collections
a repeatable step-by-step process for moving from idea to finished collection
stronger design skills in theme, motifs, color, structure, and pattern roles
more clarity, confidence, and less guesswork when building collections
Once you understand the process, collections will stop feeling so overwhelming and start feeling easy.

Yes — at least a basic understanding is recommended.
The Pattern Collection System does not teach drawing, software, or the technical process of building repeats. Instead, it focuses on the design side of collection building: choosing theme, motifs, color, structure, pattern roles, and how those pieces work together. If you already know how to make a repeating pattern but are not sure how to turn individual prints into a cohesive collection, this workbook is for you. -

Hey there! I’m Sarah.
Collections absolutely love the immersion and cohesion of collections! I’m a former graphic designer and I’ve brought my years of experience with design choices - like layout, hierarchy, flow, unity, and contrast - into what I teach in surface design.
The Pattern Collection System grew out of that work. I created it to help other designers move beyond scattered ideas and learn how to build collections that feel thoughtful, connected, and fully developed.
If you’ve ever felt like you had good ideas but no clear path to turn them into a real collection, you’re exactly who I made this for.
